Why Learn Intercultural Competence

Topic Progress:

Intercultural competence = being able to (1) effectively (2) appropriately and (3) authentically listen to, communicate with, and take action in communities across many linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

In the globalized world we live in, you are bound to interact, work and live with people from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. It can help avoid misunderstandings, conflict and offense. Learning how to engage well with diverse people makes us more equipped to be successful and good members of our local and international communities!

Intercultural competence is also a key part of language study, which, like intercultural communication skills, are in high demand in the workplace.

ICC helps us create mutual understanding and better partnerships. Among many benefits for our world economies and personal growth, these skills can allow for stronger social change efforts to make our world a better place.
