Mutual Relationships and Learning

What is service-learning?

Service-learning = service-learning integrates service activities that address human and community needs into a mindful learning experience.

Service + Reflection + Learning = Service-Learning

At its core, service-learning (SL) balances community needs and student/participants learning in a way that ensures both voices are heard. SL commits to action that is thoughtful, valuable to, and makes a difference in the community, while allowing students to engage in experiential learning.

To make the experience mutually beneficial, participants need to have a good understanding of the needs, customs, and culture of the community. This orientation module and ICC training will equip you with some of this knowledge, and you will also learn more in person in Bali!

Finally, what really drives service-learning is participants’ reflection on their service, as this helps to process the experience and apply their learning. This might look like a report, group debrief sessions, a blog post, a video, or even regular journaling! Every day will be a new adventure and learning experience, so remember to document it so you can process and take it all in.
